I spend a lot of time making lists and I have quite the bucket list — places I want to go and things I want to try, imagining a better version of myself that might exist if I keep collecting experiences. Midlife has given me a different perspective. While my bucket list of dreams continues to grow (will I ever do everything on my list? No. Will I keep adding to it? Absolutely), I have a companion list that is about what I’m subtracting from my life rather than adding.
I call it my “unbucket” list and it’s made up of things I’ve promised myself I’ll never, ever do again.
Wearing hosiery
I loved my Danskin tights when I was a little girl in dance class. They made me feel graceful and pretty even when I was Awkward with a capital A. Beyond my brief stint in Miss Dodie’s School of Dance, I don’t think I ever felt truly comfortable in any kind of hosiery. But I wore it, as most young Gen X women did — from the L’eggs packaged in egg-shaped containers to the fishnets Madonna made popular to the “professional” expensive hosiery that I would invariably get a run in before lunch.
I do not miss using clear nail polish to stop a run. I don’t miss having to peel them off at the end of the night. I don’t miss trying to subtly tug the crotch back into place while walking across a room. And don’t get me started on those torture devices known as garter belts or the “stay-put” elastic-top stockings that would end up around my knees. Oh, the money I could have saved if I had just given up sooner! Bare legs for the win, forever.
Black Friday shopping
To be honest, early morning Black Friday shopping was never really my thing. However, I have had friends over the years who were very much the type to set their alarms at 5 a.m. so they could take part in the chaotic, festive "fun." And, somehow, I would find myself saying yes to something I absolutely did not want to do.
